McCrohan transported to Australia 1832
My Family TreeJohn-Renard writes "Hi all,

The following might be of interest to you, about a Francis McCrohan, deported to Australia in 1832, moved subsequently to Washington state, USA about 1858. Can anybody help connect with this man?

I do not know what part of Kerry Francis McCrohan (my great-great grandfather) was from. He was convicted in Kerry on July 28, 1831 of the crime of sheep stealing, sentenced to life bond and transported from Cork to Sydney, Australia in 1832. His convict indents describe him as age 26, reads and writes, Roman Catholic, Single, homeplace County Kerry, Coachman and indoor servant, red haired, hazel eyes, 5' 11'' tall with freckled arms. What is interesting is that he was convicted on the same day as a James Morrissy from Kerry, for the same offense, but Morrissy was sentenced for only 7 years. Francis was granted permission to marry Grace MULLANE/MULLEN who arrived free in New South Wales at about the same time. Grace, according to family legend came from a town named after her father, Patrick MULLANE/MULLEN. Francis and Grace did an excellent job of hiding the fact that he had been a convict. Francis was pardoned, became a Constable and then a farmer in Australia, married Grace Mullen, had nine children and emigrated to Oak Harbor, Island County, Washington State, USA about 1858. He died there in 1881. The ship he was transported to Australia on was the City of Edinburgh. Any information would be of great help.

Thank you, Mary Margaret "

Mary Margaret

I believe I may have come across your Francis McCrohan in my travels on the Internet. Some time back I exchanged emails with a Rochana Feltman who had published some of her own genealogical data on her personal website. She lists amongst her ancestors a Francis McCrohan who married a Grace Mullen.. however in her telling of the tale this takes place in Ireland in 1939. Other details tally - the time spent in Australia, followed by a relocation to Washington State, USA.

Interestingly, she claims that Francis settled in Whidbey Island, WA.. where a number of McCrohans are to be found today. Whidbey Island also boasts a McCrohan Street.. A website dedicated to the history of the island ( has the following to say:

In 1858 a boatload of Irish arrived at Oak Harbor from Australia where they first migrated. The original Irish to Oak Harbor included the McCrohans with several unmarried daughters; the Nunans and O''Learys. Sea Captains Morse and Barrington married into the McCrohan family along with Captain Adams, and their descendants continue to live in Oak Harbor.

Rochana credits a Peggy Townsdin for most of her research.

Isn't it such a small world?!

This is the information taken directly off Rochana Feltmans's web site:

"Francis McCrohan (1818-1881) was born in County Cork, Ireland. Grace Mullen and Francis McCrohan were married in Ireland in 1839 when they were both 21 years old. They emigrated to Melbourne, Australia soon thereafter. They had nine children: Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Christine, Frank, Ned, Tom, Michael and Dave. The family, with the exception of Mary and Christine, moved to Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island, Washington, in 1858, and were among the original pioneers of Whidbey Island. Mary and Christine moved to Oak Harbor two years later, in 1860."

(A note to clear confusion: Jerry mentioned it took place in 1939, that maybe a typo, or was a typo on Rochana's original web site. 1839 is the year I find on the site.)
