Jerry writes "Here are a couple of photos of Dennis Eugene McCrohan aka/Mars Bonfire. The interesting thing is that hardly anyone, even in the music industry, knows what he looks like -- he's always kept a low profile. But seeing as you're "family" I thought you might enjoy a peek.
Dennis was born in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada to Owen and Margaret (nee Millar) McCrohan on April 21, 1943. He has a younger sister, Margie, and brother, Jerry (Gerald) who was the drummer for Steppenwolf. Unfortunately Jerry died in a car
accident several years ago.
Dennis and Jerry worked as musicians under the name Edmonton because they thought it sounded "English" -- this is what Dennis told me, anyway; it was the height of the '60s British Invasion, of course, and they thought they'd have a better chance of getting signed to a label if they were English.
Their father, Owen, ran the Jubilee Pavilion on Lake Ontario in Oshawa for many years. He'd book the big bands and I suppose this is how the boys developed their interest in music.
Owen was the only son of Eugene McCrohan and Lu (I'm afraid I don't know her maiden name). Eugene died in his sleep when the flame of a gas-jet light went out during the night. Owen was very young at the time and never knew his father
really. Owen, who died about 15 years ago, did know that Eugene's family were from the Ring of Kerry area. I'll try to find out more information for you if I can. My daughter, Shawn, visited the area a couple of years ago and took a few photos
of a McCrohan hair salon and the sign to the McCrohan farm that is the same one that you have a link for on your site, I believe.
Mars and I are divorced now, but we have three wonderful children:
Shawn McCrohan (a girl)
I would guess that the major family trait of our McCrohan family is the overbite and enormous front teeth. Thank goodness for braces!
And thank you for the links page, as well, Jerry. I visited the Dennis and Catherine McCrohan Golden site and really enjoyed it. One thing jumped out at me, too. The part where it's mentioned that "Dennis Golden Jr. ...-cause of death was chronic Nephritis." Mars Bonfire almost died of it as a youngster . He was hospitalized for some time and perhaps if Owen and Margaret hadn't called in specialists from England, he might very well have died.
Good luck with your site.
The photos are dated 1970 (B&W ) and 1971
I took the photos, BTW, and you're welcome to post them--unless you hear otherwise from Mars. But I don't know why he'd object.
I'm also including a photo of Eugene McCrohan and his brother and father, I think. Perhaps if you post it, someone who visits your site will
recognize the photo and help us acquire more information.
Eugene McCrohan, Mars' grandfather, is the one one the right. I think it's his brother and father who also appear in the picture.
