Dear Mary -
Your letter of 08 November, regarding Francis McCrohan and Grace Mullin -your gr gr grandparents, was received in our Archives. Many apologies for the delay in this reply! As requested by you, a copy of the Marriage entry for the above couple has been taken from the original Marriage Register and is enclosed. As Brother Hall mentioned in his previous e-mail, very little information was recorded in the years prior to March 1856 -the date when Civil Registration began in NSW. Prior to this date all details on Certificates were taken from the Church Registers.

Regarding the Ref Nos; Vol.1837.242-90 refers to the 'Return' form which was sent to the Registry of the time by Fr McEncroe -these 'Returns' were usually sent in monthly by all ministers and priests. A copy of this entry is enclosed (available at most suburban libraries here). Vol.1837.126-353 refers to the original Register in our Archives, 126 being the Registery's Ref No.of our Register and 353 is the entry number on the relevant page. Note that only the last number '3' is shown on the copy. The Archives Ref No for this Register is V.1101A.

You mention Mary that Francis arrived on the 'City of Edinburgh', the following details for this ship are located in 'The Convict Ships 1787-1868' by Charles Bateson:

'Arrived: Sydney Cove 27.06.1832 (second voyage to Aust) -Barque -366 ton -built: Corina 1813- Master: Giles Wade - Surgeon: Ant.Donoghoe -left: Cork 18.03.1832- came direct -101 days- 145 male convicts -6 relanded (at Cork) -139 landed at Sydney Cove.'

You also mention the Permission to Marry entry; this was separate to the Marriage Certificate, also the Permission was never given by the priest or minister but by the Governor of the day, in this case Major General Sir Richard Bourke KCB, who was in office from 03.12.1831 to 05.12.1837. Enclosed is a copy of the Permission to Marry. Unfortunately parents were not recorded!!

I am wondering, Mary, if Francis and Grace died in Australia or America! Their parents and other details should be recorded on their Death Certificates (which I could not locate on our NSW fiche). While checking the fiche however, I noted the following entries concerning Francis and Grace:

1845 Margaret McCrohon -parents Francis & Grace -LQ = Wollongong Ref.1589.121A
1846 Christiana McCrohon -"              "            "                       " Ref. 1607 .121 A
1854 Michael McCrohon -   "              "            "                       "  Ref.1867.121A
1877 Francis McCrohan to Harriet Cavill - Wollongong Ref.4775
1900 Francis McCrohan -parents: Francis & Grace -Parramatta Ref. 13908

I checked the NSW fiche and noted the following entries re Francis and Harriet's children:

1878 / 24685 Grace H -Wollongong Death: 1878 / 10520 Grace H -Wollongong
1882/19715 Harriett E -Woonona
1885/23736 David J -Woonona 1885/11135 David J -Woonona
1888/25878 Agnes -Woonona 1888/10433 Agnes -Woonona
1900/9891  Harriett McCrohan to Thomas Clancey -Wollongong

(no children were noted on fiche)

In our Card Index of Marriages at St Mary's Cathedral 1856-1903 were two marriages of interest; the first was of Elizabeth McCrohan to Thomas Nunan 1858 and the second was Mary McCrohan to Maurice OLeary 1856 - Francis is shown as a Constable in 1856. Photocopies and scans of details of these marriages are enclosed.

The following children were noted to Maurice and Mary:

Birth: Mary OLeary 1857/12159 -Wollongong (father shown as Morris)
Death: Mary OLeary 1857/04743 -Wollongong
Birth: Thomas Oleary 1858/13472 -Wollongong

As the family lived at Wollongong (the 'Gong' as it is sometimes referred to here) I am enclosing a photocopy of details of this town (now a city) from the 1866 NSW Gazetteer.

Enclosed, Mary is an Application Form whereby you can obtain Transcription copies of bd&m's in NSW for only $13.20 Australian (incl GST). These are available from two ladies authorised by the Registry of NSW. The same details are given as on a Certificate from the Registry but the Transcription copies cannot be used for legal purposes - Joy Murrin will advise re type of payment. Periods available are set out. This service will terminate sometime next year! !

Do you have the arrival copies for Grace Mullin and Francis McCrohan, Mary? If not, I may be able to copy these for you. Thank you for your enquiry and Bank Draft for $53.15 Australian; this amount is in excess of that required to cover your initial query, however the additional information and copies enclosed will also be covered by this fee. Enclosed is our Receipt for this amount.

Yours sincerely

Since typing this letter I received your e-mail which showed additional information. Francis seems to be the 'lost' son who returned to Australia! You appear to have copies of Francis McCrohan's arrival papers.
